The need for our state Justices, Judges, Magistrates and judicial department personnel to have access to the latest in education and training which is relevant to the problems encountered every day is great; but state funding has, even in times of economic stability, been anemic.
Responding to the need for more judicial education and at the suggestion of the Colorado Supreme Court in late 2002, CJI developed the concept of the Judicial Education Fund (the Fund). As devised, the Fund would allow CJI to raise private funds and develop programs to provide the judiciary and members of the judicial department with the highest quality continuing legal education.
The Denver Foundation provided the home for the Fund and assisted CJI in creating an entity that is used exclusively for the education and training of judges, justices and other judicial department personnel. The CJI Judicial Education Preservation Fund was established with several thousand dollars in donations from individuals and CJI. Since being established for general contributions in 2003, the fund has grown with regular contributions from the remarkably successful Judicial Excellence for Colorado Dinners as well as continued contributions from individuals.
Contributions can be made to CJI for the Fund. When submitting contributions to CJI, please indicate they are for the CJI Judicial Education Fund. Or, you can make a contribution directly to the Fund by contacting the Denver Foundation (please select Colorado Judicial Institute Education Fund).
CJI has funded requests for individuals to attend seminars and training classes, sponsored speakers at the state judicial conference, provided funds for judicial officers to attend conferences on ADR and family law issues, and sponsored meetings designed to train participants on new specialty courts and collaborative efforts.
Requests for grants from the education fund are accepted year around by CJI. Instructions and rules for applying for a grant are available below.
