A Shared Vision of Judicial Excellence

The Colorado Judicial Institute is one of the only independent and nonpartisan citizen’s groups in the nation devoted to the excellence and independence of its state courts. Established in 1979, CJI was originally formed to preserve Colorado’s merit election system for judges. Its mission has broadened to include public education about the judiciary, support for judicial education, recognition of judicial excellence, and collaboration with the public, the legislature and the judiciary to improve Colorado’s courts.

CJI JUDICIAL EDUCATION PRESERVATION FUND

The budget crisis in the state of Colorado has added impetus to CJI's plan to create a source of funds for the education of judges and judicial branch personnel. The need for our courts to be exposed to the latest in education and training which is relevant to the problems encountered every day is great; but the legislature, even in good times, is reluctant to appropriate funds.

The Colorado Judicial Institute has been working with the state's judicial administration to create a program which would allow private industry and individuals to donate funds to be used for judicial education without incurring ethical problems or raising objections from special interest groups. A program that meets these objectives in now in place.

With the co-operation and participation of the Denver Foundation, a fund now exists which will be used exclusively for the education and training of judges, justices and other judicial personnel. The CJI Judicial Education Preservation Fund already has received several thousand dollars in donations which will be used to help educate and train those who administer our system of justice. Contributions can be made to CJI or the Denver Foundation as long as they are clearly identified as being for this fund.
