From Kabul to Colorado: Why the Rule of Law Matters

With Perspectives From Judge Nadera Akbari

Date: Tuesday, August 23, 2022
Time: 5:30-7:15pm
Location: Polsinelli PC, 1401 Lawrence Street, Suite 2300, Denver, CO 80202

Presented under the auspices of CJI's Young Professionals Committee

Please join us for a "fireside chat" discussion with Hon. Nadera Akbari, an Afghan judge who fled Afghanistan with her family in Summer 2021 in the wake of Taliban takeover. Hon. Colleen Clark of the Arapahoe County Court will interview Judge Akbari with the help of interpreter and attorney Shahrzad Shamim.

If you missed this same event with the Colorado Women's Bar Association in June, this is your second chance!

About Judge Akbari

Judge Akbari is a former member of Afghanistan’s highest court. She worked for 17 years in the Afghan court system, starting in traffic court and working her way up to the country's Supreme Court in Kabul. She worked to pass the Violence Against Women law through parliament and heard the first case in violation of that law by a member of the Taliban. Judge Akbari has been threatened, assaulted, and kidnapped, and she and her entire family have suffered because of her commitment to bringing justice to the people of Afghanistan. With the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August 2021, Judge Akbari, with her husband and six children, fled Afghanistan and relocated to Northglenn, Colorado.
